Based on Mattel’s Masters of the Universe toy line, “He-Man and the Masters of the Universe” is an animated television series created in the United States by Filmation and shown on Cartoon Network. One of the most successful and well-liked animated series of the 1980s was “He-Man,” which is more commonly referred to by its acronym.
It first aired on television in September 1983 and remained on the air until 1985, with each of its two seasons including a total of 65 episodes. He-Man and She-Ra: The Secret of the Sword was a movie that was released in theaters towards the end of the original run of the show. This movie served as the introduction for the show’s spinoff literal sister series, which was titled She-Ra: Princess of Power.
The show also spawned a movie that was a full-length feature film. Reruns continued to be shown via syndication up to the year 1988, when USA Network made the decision to acquire the rights to the series. He-Man continued to be broadcast in the USA until September of 1990.
- The popularity of the toy-based program in syndication had a significant impact on other animation studios, which led to the production of half-hour “cartoon ads,” which in turn significantly altered the market for syndicated cartoons.
- In addition to a live-action movie that was released in 1987, the franchise has been reimagined several times in the form of comic books and comic strips.
On August 16, 2002, Toonami began airing a reimagined version of the 1980s cartoon He-Man and the Masters of the Universe under the title Masters of the Universe vs. The Snake Men during its second season. In 2021, Netflix debuted not one but two continuation series: the one was geared at an adult audience and was dubbed Masters of the Universe: Revelation; the second was an animated CGI revival aimed at children and families and was also titled He-Man and the Masters of the Universe.

He-Man is a fictional figure that serves as the protagonist of the sword and planet Masters of the Universe franchise. This franchise consists of a toy line, multiple animated television programs, comic books, and a feature film. He-Man has been featured in all of these mediums.
- He-Man is distinguished by his superior strength to that of humans and, in the majority of iterations, serves as Prince Adam’s alter ego.
- He-Man and his allies make an effort to battle off the evil forces led by Skeletor, who is He-greatest Man’s adversary, in order to protect the land of Eternia and the mysteries of Castle Grayskull.
The character was designed by Roger Sweet, who had the intention of creating the character in such a way that he would be abstract and generic enough to be applied into any context and genre. Sweet also chose the name “He-Man” because of its ability to be applied to a wide variety of settings and media.
- After presenting Mattel with three distinct iterations of the figure, including one that depicted a spaceman and another that depicted a soldier, the barbarian iteration of the character was selected and further developed into the character’s current appearance.
- He-Man has attained the status of a homosexual icon and built up a following among members of the LGBT community, particularly among gay men.
Mattel is reportedly aware of the fact that He-Man has a fanbase and a standing as a homosexual icon, both of which the firm is amenable to, as stated by a variety of corporate workers and insiders.
