Is The Grinch on Disney +?
At this point in the month of December, most families are probably watching their preferred Christmas films through services such as Netflix, Disney+, and others. Many families celebrate the Christmas season by watching movies like “Home Alone,” “Elf,” “The Polar Express,” and “The Santa Clause,” in addition to all of the traditional claymation films.
How the Grinch Stole Christmas, which was released in 2000 and became a smash, is another December classic. But would Christmastime staples like “How the Grinch Stole Christmas” and “A Christmas Story” be available on Disney+? To clarify, I’m not talking about the television movie that aired in 1996 or the animated version that was redone in 2018.
Nope. The version from the year 2000 that starred Jim Carey appears to be the one that a lot of people are looking for. Users have probably been searching for “How the Grinch Stole Christmas” on the recently launched Disney+ streaming service because it appears to offer everything under the sun that you could possibly want to watch.
- Unfortunately, none of these searches have shown up anything useful;
- I’m sorry to be the bearer of bad news, but How the Grinch Stole Christmas is not currently available on Disney+;
- This is mostly due to the fact that Disney does not really own the film;
(Universal Pictures was the studio that oversaw the production of it.) The next piece of good news is that Netflix now has the rights to stream the movie. Those who have a membership to Netflix and live in the United States, at the very least, will be able to satisfy their need to see Jim Carey in The Grinch as long as they do so.
Because, as far as anyone can tell, the version of the film that was released in 2000 vanished just a few weeks before Christmas for people in the UK. Why then aren’t customers in the United Kingdom able to watch How the Grinch Stole Christmas on Netflix? Everything has to do with the streaming rights, and it would appear that Netflix’s rights to stream it have expired at the most worst possible time.
“Netflix obtains licenses to broadcast television episodes and movies from production companies and other content providers located all over the world. If we do not renew these licenses, they will eventually expire. We acquire licensing rights for TV shows and movies for a certain period of time — not indefinitely — so some titles do end up leaving Netflix, despite the fact that we make every effort to keep the content that you want to watch “The statement was made by a member of the Netflix Help Center, according to the Daily Mail.
“If a movie or television show that you really enjoy will no longer be available, it is because our license arrangement with the content source is set to expire. When a television show or movie’s run of episodes has come to an end, we consider whether or not to continue streaming it based on the same criteria that we use for possible new material.” Just so you know, if you saw and liked the version of The Grinch that came out in 2018, starring Benedict Cumberbatch, you can find that version streaming on Netflix as well.
(I apologize once more to those who only have access to Disney+.) Finding the 1996 animation of the grouchy green Who is, on the other hand, a little bit more difficult. On Amazon Video, you can rent it for $3.99 a month or purchase it outright for $7.99.
- Therefore, the answer is no; the version of The Grinch from 2000 is not available on Disney+;
- (Depressing, isn’t it?) However, Disney+ does provide several fantastic holiday classics that can’t be found on Netflix, such as “Home Alone,” “The Santa Clause,” “The Muppet Christmas Carol,” and “A Christmas Carol” (starring Jim Carey, if you really need your Jim Carey fix;
) Not to mention the recently released film Noelle, which stars Anna Kendrick and has, up to this point, garnered positive reviews.

The Grinch, based on the book by Dr. Seuss, is brought to you by Illumination. According to Decider, the animated movie, which includes Benedict Cumberbatch as the Grinch and is narrated by Pharrell Williams, was removed from the site because Netflix’s arrangement with the film’s production firms, Illumination and Universal Pictures, had expired.
It is now unknown if Netflix will negotiate a new deal or whether the movie will instead be distributed to additional streaming services that compete with Netflix. To our great fortune, though, you can still rent the movie for for $3.99 on Amazon Prime, Google Play, Vudu, and Youtube TV.
Amazon also sells the Blu-Ray and DVD editions of the film, in case you’d prefer have a tangible copy of the movie than stream it digitally. It is completely understandable why users are so disappointed with this news, but at least the streaming site is still broadcasting the live-action version of How the Grinch Stole Christmas starring Jim Carrey from the year 2000.
While we do that, we’ll keep our fingers crossed that Netflix will suddenly develop a heart three sizes larger than it already is. Who knows, considering the enthusiastic response received on the internet, maybe the streaming powerhouse may bring back the much-loved movie just in time for Christmas morning.
