When did Cartoon Network end?

Is Cartoon Network dying?

You may want to avert your eyes at this point if you are employed by Disney Channel, Nickelodeon, or Cartoon Network. Nielsen figures on network viewing in 2021 have been compiled by Variety, and the results depict a bleak picture for the majority of networks.

This year, every major animation broadcaster had a drop in viewership of more than ten percent, which is reflective of the continued loss of linear television. The emergence of streaming platforms and video sharing platforms is, of course, the background here; yet, the viewership of these platforms is not included in these charts since it is assessed in such a different way. These sites, most notably Netflix and YouTube, have been eating away at the viewership of children’s cable television broadcasters for years.

All of the aforementioned networks now have sibling streaming services that are owned by the same parent corporation for the very first time this year. There is an affiliation between the Nick Channels and Paramount+, Disney Channels and Disney+, and Cartoon Network and Adult Swim and HBO Max.

The parent corporations are more aggressively encouraging viewers to accept streaming than they ever have before by making prestige titles exclusive to those platforms. By temporarily turning down its channels in several countries, Disney has made its point quite apparent.

Is Cartoon Network losing money?

This morning saw the release of the MoffettNathanson report, and this afternoon will see Nickelodeon host its first in-person upfront presentation for advertisers in almost two years. – Kids have a screen addiction, but it’s not the original flat screen that’s still hooked to their parents’ cable box.

  • Rather, it’s the newer, more advanced screens;
  • According to findings published today in a research titled “State of Linear Viewing (2021)” by MoffettNathanson analysts, the amount of time spent watching children’s programs on linear television dropped by a staggering 53 percent between the years 2019 and 2021;

Is there no more 2D animation? It’s not likely, in my opinion. I’ve read a lot of articles lamenting the death of 2D animation, to the point that it’s become accepted as a “fact” within the industry; thus, should I consider 2D animation to be dead? No, this is not quite accurate at all. Despite common misconceptions, traditional two-dimensional animation is very much still being produced today.

  • Since the release of The Princess and the Frog in 2009, there have been no mainstream theatrical releases;
  • Since then, Disney has favored 3D films, with Tangled and Frozen becoming enormous box office successes;

The fact that Disney declared that 2D animation was no longer being produced was not helpful. In point of fact, The Princess and the Frog made a significant amount of money despite only being available in a 2D format. However, the next year, Tangled made twice as much as the previous year, and Rapunzel was more profitable than Tiana.

Many people feel that 3D animation represents the future of both the technical and storytelling parts of video production, regardless of the sort of video production it is: whether it be a full-length feature film or an animated explainer video.

On the other hand, we don’t necessarily agree with that point of view. No matter what method you decide to use for your animation, it should be able to assist you in conveying the tale. Method is a means to a goal, not an end in and of itself. In its first years, 3D was sluggish, costly, and immature, and there was a scarcity of skilled professionals to draw upon.

Studios that specialize in 3D are now creating strong tales as a result of the investment in talent that they have made over the years. And because it is now both more affordable and more efficient, software has the potential to be used into television productions.

It would appear that this is the case. Does this mean that there is no future for 2D? Combining 2D and 3D animation methods can result in the creation of compelling animated works. Is Disney Channel declining?

The following is an excerpt from the special report “Fading Ratings” produced by the Variety Intelligence Platform. This study will be made accessible exclusively to members beginning on January 4, 2022. The changes in TV viewership among overall audience members as well as the key demo aged 18 to 49 will be analyzed in depth in the report that will be provided. Kids Networks In recent years, total primetime audiences for the main kids cable networks have shown a consistent downward trend. Although Nickelodeon and Cartoon Network benefit from the fact that data are only available as of 2016, and hence miss out on some important years of viewership decrease, the pattern of fast audience evaporation has struck all material geared toward children and teenagers.

It is important to note that overall audiences for primetime programming include the critical youngsters demographic of 2-11 year olds, who will constitute the majority of the audience. The data for children ages 2 to 11 are not currently accessible; nonetheless, considering that overall viewership does account for children, it is an adequate metric to analyze trends.

Because of the significant drops that have been seen, there is little chance that the data would display a significant difference even if the 2-11 cut was made accessible. In comparison to 2014 levels, the primetime audience for Disney Channel has decreased by 1.

7 million to 233k (-88. 1%), the primetime audience for Disney Junior has decreased by 345k to 258k (-57. 2%) and is now more watched than Disney Channel, and Nick Jr. sees audiences falling by 254k (-52. 3%) to an average of 232k viewers. 3%, or 768k viewers. There are three primary reasons that kids are watching less television, and all of them are related to streaming media in some way. The first challenge is the growing amount of competition, which began with YouTube but has now spread to practically all SVOD, FAST, and AVOD providers that offer material geared toward children and teenagers.

Parents are relieved that their children would be subjected to less advertisements now that these platforms either have shortened ad loads or the option for there to be no advertisements at all. Streaming has also provided viewers with a fresh watching experience, freed from the confines of the linear, unidirectional format of conventional television.

As a result of major media companies prioritizing children’s television libraries as a core component of their subscription video on demand (SVOD) services, such as Disney+, HBO Max, and Paramount+, and as a result of other companies, such as Netflix, Amazon, and Apple, having a commitment to children’s content, we are likely to continue seeing annual declines in children’s cable TV viewership.

  • This pattern will be cause for concern for Disney and ViacomCBS in the future;
  • Disney Channel and Nickelodeon are two of cable’s most expensive networks, despite the fact that media emphasis is typically focused on the sports networks as being the most expensive cable networks;

Since Disney Channel will have a larger monthly affiliate fee in 2020 ($1. 10) than CNN would ($1.01), yet audiences will continue to decline, there is no longer a justification for charging high charges for programming that only a small number of people are watching.

Various News Networks When it comes to the main cable news networks, things take a totally different turn. It was never going to be possible for the viewership boom of 2020, which was driven by the twin flames of a worldwide pandemic and a crazy Presidential race, to sustain itself moving into 2021.

The good news is that, compared to 2014, the average number of people tuning in during prime time for the major cable news networks has significantly increased. The average number of viewers for Fox News in 2021 is 2.

4 million, which is an increase of 644,000 (+36. 8%), MSNBC’s 1. 5 million viewers represents an increase of 159. 6% on 2014’s average of 592,000, and CNN’s 2021 average of 1. 1 million viewers represents an increase of 589k (112%) from the 2014 baseline. Even better, when the average audiences of 2021 are compared to those of 2019, CNN’s audience size has grown while those of Fox News and MSNBC have shrunk slightly.

  1. The average viewership for CNN in 2021 is up 15;
  2. 4% to 149k, while Fox News’ audience has decreased by just 4.3% to 107k, and MSNBC’s viewership has decreased by 11.7%;
  3. (-204k);
  4. Expect year-over-year viewership shift will continue to trend upward in the following year as a result of the fact that the year 2022 will bring with it the first set of national elections since the presidential contest in 2020;

It appears that cable news will continue to be one of the only successful tentpoles of cable television for some time to come. Networks Devoted to Sports The success of ESPN in comparison to that of other sports networks has created a gap of over 1.3 million viewers between that network and its rivals, including sister network ESPN2, which is the second most viewed primetime sports network.

  1. However, even this is not enough to prevent a drop in ESPN’s viewership numbers;
  2. After reaching a peak of 2.2 million viewers during primetime in 2014, the audience for the sports channel has since decreased by 26;

6%, or 587,000 people. There is no way that any sports network will be able to report a larger primetime audience in 2021 than they did in 2014. On the other hand, there are some encouraging signs for the year 2021. Eleven sports networks reported an increase in viewership in 2021, which was a significant improvement from the previous year, which was badly harmed first by the cessation of live sports that the epidemic caused, and subsequently by the dearth of live game crowds.

Regular Show and Adventure Time were at the height of their popularity, leading the pack of very entertaining series together with Steven Universe, which had just made its debut the previous year. After a sabbatical of five years, Toonami also came back on the air, bringing with it an adult-oriented lineup of anime.

Over the Garden Wall was one of the finest series that Cartoon Network has ever produced, if not the best show overall, and it premiered that same year. It was a far cry from only five years before, when Cartoon Network was in the midst of its Dark Age, which was characterized by low-quality programming and an abundance of live-action episodes.

I hadn’t given much consideration to the subject until a few weeks ago, when I saw a significant increase in the number of people reading my essay. What’s the deal? I was able to find the solution to my problem by doing a speedy search on Google. After eight years of generating chaotic, hyper-stylized, and amusing episodes, “The Amazing World of Gumball” was scheduled to finish on June 24th, 2019, bringing the show’s run to a close.

  • And in conjunction with this, I came across a number of pieces that announced that the Cartoon Network Renaissance was coming to an end;
  • And after reading all of this, I couldn’t help but be curious;
  • Well…is it? It would be really convenient if you could accept this offer;

After all, I published my very first piece in 2014, which was a time of great success for Cartoon Network. Even series like Clarence and Uncle Grandpa, which I didn’t particularly enjoy watching but am aware have a dedicated following, were contributing to the overall high caliber of the pleasure we were receiving from the wide variety of programs that were on offer.

Alongside them was another popular show called “The Amazing World of Gumball.” However, the majority of those shows have concluded. Regular Show and Adventure Time, the two shows that catapulted Cartoon Network back into the public eye and made it amazing again, both came to an end in 2017 and 2018, respectively.

After the conclusion of Gumball, the only shows from 2014 that will continue are Steven Universe and Teen Titans Go! I must confess that I am not quite as enthusiastic about Cartoon Network as I used to be. When I look at their roster as it stands right now, I can only shrug.

We Bare Bears is a band that can keep me entertained just good and OK K. when I’m staying in a motel. comes up with some good stuff every now and then (that Ghoul School episode was amazing, by the way!!).

However, that is the extent of it. Regular Show, Adventure Time, and Steven Universe are the only three shows that I regularly watch. I don’t find myself doing that with other shows. This is only my own view. Nevertheless, I was interested. Is this the final episode of the Cartoon Network Renaissance? And if that is the case, how can we know it? In order to get an answer to this issue, I watched all of Cartoon Network’s original shows, both animated and live-action, from 1999 all the way up to 2019.

I selected the IMDB ratings, which were collected in June of 2019, since hundreds of individuals have evaluated these shows, which makes them a decent approximation of opinions held in the real world. I also meticulously examined the date that the program first aired and the date that it went off the air for each year because reruns make things too chaotic to keep track of and also cause you to lose viewers who may be fans of the show.

I also included DC series that had their world premieres on Cartoon Network because they were such an important part of the history of Cartoon Network (anyone remember Teen Titans and Justice League?). I did not provide an analysis of every episode (such as Johnny Test), as doing so would have led us into murky terrain, such as discussing shows that were produced in other nations. This indicates that viewers have a perception that the overall quality of programmes being shown on Cartoon Network is worse than the quality of series that were broadcast during the network’s golden age. The Top Three, on the other hand, had contemporary programs that were on level with, or even better than, shows from the early 2000s.

There is little question that 2009 was a pivotal year for The Whole Set’s precipitous decline. At this point in time, CN was producing some of the worst live action series in the history of television. Destroy Build Destroy received a rating of 2, The Othersiders received a rating of 3.

5, Brainrush received a rating of 3. 5, Bobb’e Says received a rating of 9, and Dude, What Would Happen received a rating of 1. 7! 2009 was the only year that these three shows (Bobb’e, Brainrush, and Othersiders) were ever broadcast.

In the meanwhile, there is a shortage of high-quality series that are shown on the network since Grim Adventures and Codename had recently come to an end, and Regular Show and Adventure Time weren’t scheduled to debut until the year after that, in 2010.

  1. The year 2017 was not a nice one for CN.;
  2. 2019 is so far looking okay;
  3. When compared to the other months of the year, June 2019 is significantly below average (6;
  4. 36 and 8;
  5. 17 vs;
  6. 79 and 8;
  7. 29, respectively);
  8. Only four other years have a grade that is higher than its for both the overall quality and the Top Three;

It’s not terrible, but I wouldn’t call it fantastic either. The cancellation of Regular Show and Adventure Time has already had a negative impact on the quality of Cartoon Network’s programming.

As of the time this article was written, The Amazing World of Gumball has reached a score of 8.2, putting it in second place among all shows for the month of June 2019, only behind Steven Universe, which has a score of 8.3. In the event that nothing else changes, the decreasing trend that began in 2017 will continue in 2020. We should not have to be concerned about this, since it appears that Cartoon Network may be receiving an adrenaline boost that they have richly earned.

  • Mao Mao: Heroes of Pure Heart and Infinity Train will both have their world premieres in 2018;
  • Both of them have received positive feedback for their respective pilot episodes, and both are already attracting fans who are anxious to see fresh and intriguing programming;

Between the two, I’m going to have to put my money on Infinity Train due to the fact that its “everything goes” mentality reminds me of the delightful unpredictability of Adventure Time. It’s possible that people may take an interest in Cartoon Network again if they provide what they promise.

Which reminds me to return to the primary inquiry: is the Cartoon Network Renaissance providing an answer? Let’s take one more look at the graph before I respond to your question. The Classic Age, the Golden Age, The Dark Age, and the Renaissance would be the four distinct eras that make up the history of Cartoon Network if it were to be broken up into periods.

Now, in my perspective, there is not really a formal beginning or conclusion to these periods since they flow into one another. In other words, there is no clear break between any of them. It’s quite accurate to how things actually happened, such as how the Renaissance didn’t begin in a single year but rather gradually and over a period of time.

Therefore, the exact years in which these ages begin and end are up for debate; nonetheless, it may go something like this. Reruns of vintage cartoons from Warner Brothers, Hannah-Barbera, and Pop Eye were featured when The Classic Age debuted in 1992 on Cartoon Network.

However, particularly since Dexter’s Laboratory, CN’s first major success, which premiered in 1996, original programming has played an increasingly important role in the channel’s overall lineup. In the years 1997 and 1998, the following shows debuted after the debut of Dexter: Johnny Bravo, Cow and Chicken, I am Weasel, and The Powerpuff Girls.

But in my perspective, the Golden Age didn’t begin in earnest until 1999, when the first episodes of Ed, Edd n Eddy, Courage the Cowardly Dog, and Mike, Lu & Og were shown. At the same time, the immensely popular weekly event known as Cartoon Cartoon Fridays began airing.

Toonami was also going 100 miles per hour with its critically praised and action-oriented episodes at the time, which introduced anime to millions of children across North America, including me. If not for Toonami, anime’s popularity in the United States would be nowhere like what it is now.

Even after the cancellation of a number of the Golden Age’s original series in the early 2000s, the Golden Age remained powerful until that time. Amazing new DC series, such as Justice League and Teen Titans, began airing for the first time on Cartoon Network.

During this time period, a number of other series, such as The Grim Adventures of Billy and Mandy, Kids Next Door, and Megas XLR, made their debut and quickly became popular. During this time period, Genndy Tartakovsky also developed two of his most acclaimed series ever, Samurai Jack and Star Wars: Clone Wars (not to be confused with the three-dimensional iteration of the series).

  • This is still one of my go-to shows whenever I watch Cartoon Network;
  • Unfortunately, all good things eventually come to an end, and the Golden Age was no exception to this rule;
  • The majority of the original series from the 1990s finished or were in the process of ending, and the shows that succeeded them were neither as innovative nor as beloved as the ones they had replaced;

In addition, Cartoon Cartoon Fridays went off the air without so much as a peep, with live-action hosts taking the place of their animated colleagues before the show was officially canceled in 2007. In 2008, Toonami saw its first cancellation as a result of low ratings and various programming decisions that were questioned.

  1. I don’t understand why they did it, but Cartoon Network started airing live-action episodes on their network, and I think that was one of their worst decisions ever;
  2. Why.on earth.would you ever.broadcast live-action shows.on a network that is only devoted to animation??? It makes no sense! And oooooh boy;

They have truly let this one go through their fingers. The majority of their live-action productions were terrible, which was to be expected. In addition, cartoons were not exempt from this calamity because many of them had an exceptionally poor quality, such as “Problem Solverz,” which had a rating of 1.9, and “Secret Mountain Fort Awesome,” which had a rating of 3.5.

As a result, I place the beginning of the Dark Age at the year 2006, when the overall quality of the programming began to decline to a level from which Cartoon Network has never really recovered. Megas XLR and Star Wars: The Clone Wars were the final series of the Golden Age to be of a high quality, and they were the shows that kept CN alive until 2005 when they were cancelled.

2005 was the year that saw the conclusion of both the original Powerpuff Girls and the original run of Cartoon Cartoon Fridays, with just Ed, Edd, and Eddy continuing on. In 2010, a number of brand new episodes that were of a very high quality began airing on Cartoon Network, marking the beginning of the network’s road to recovery.

It goes without saying that I’m referring about Regular Show and Adventure Time, but we also had Young Justice and Sym-Bionic Titan to make up the difference. Regrettably, despite the fact that the average ratings increased in 2010, the early 2010s continued to be among the lowest in recent history.

It wasn’t until 2014 that the general numbers started to creep back up again, and it wasn’t until then that we saw a great variety of various series that were at least decent. As a result, from 2010 all the way up to 2018, I split the Renaissance Era into an early era and a late period, with 2014 acting as the midway point because 2013 was the year that all the live action shows came to an end.

  1. The Cartoon Network finally emerged from the last of its difficult phases and returned to the fundamentals that made it such a wonderful channel;
  2. Now, as of right now, I am putting the conclusion of Renaissance in the year 2018, as that is the year that Adventure Time finished;

It seems very appropriate that Adventure Time, which premiered in 2010 and served as the impetus for the channel’s resurrection, should likewise conclude around this time frame. The quality of 2019 has, up to this point, given us reason to believe that we are about to enter a period of gradually declining quality.

  1. A downturn, perhaps not as severe as the one we seen in the middle of the 2000s, but nonetheless present;
  2. It appears that the Renaissance is over;
  3. Bear in mind, however, that the lens through which I examine this situation is quite narrow;

I did not check over the entirety of Cartoon Network’s show library, nor did I consider the impact that Adult Swim and Toonami have on the channel’s programming. Because streaming is seeing explosive growth right now, it’s possible that we ought to start considering the number of people that watch a show when evaluating its success.

In addition to that, we also have cartoons that are exclusively available online, such as Villainous, which are gaining more and more fans each day. We have just scratched the surface when it comes to the quality and history of Cartoon Network.

Who is to claim that the Renaissance era has finally come to an end? It’s possible that in another five years I’ll be singing a different tune and putting the conclusion at a different point in time. Perhaps I would keep on extending it farther and further into the foreseeable future.

After all, the premiere of Mao Mao is taking place tonight, and critics are praising it highly. Additionally, it now holds a score of 8.5 out of 10 on IMDB! That makes it the program with the highest rating of 2019, and it moves to the sixth spot on my list out of 82 total shows.

And Steven Universe is going strong with a movie and an additional season of the show! It’s possible that they’ll bring about not another Golden Age, but a Silver Age instead. Yeah, I like that.
